1. Project Background
Plant-based proteins, particularly soy protein isolate, have seen explosive demand globally due to the booming meat-alternative and functional food markets. India, as a massive agricultural hub and a rapidly growing consumer market, has become a strategic base for soy protein processing.
In this project, a leading Indian food ingredient manufacturer aimed to expand its production line for premium soy protein isolate. They needed a reliable Soy Protein Isolate Air Classifier Mill that could handle the material’s unique physical properties without compromising its nutritional value or functional characteristics.
2. The Challenges
Soy protein isolate is a highly heat-sensitive material. To achieve a smooth texture and excellent solubility in end-use applications (such as protein shakes or meat analogues), the client required a strictly controlled particle size of d99 = 92.8μm.
The client faced several critical challenges in sourcing the right equipment:
- Heat Sensitivity: High temperatures during the grinding process can easily cause protein denaturation, ruining the product’s solubility and gelation properties.
- Agglomeration: Fine protein powders tend to stick to the machine walls and agglomerate, causing blockages and inconsistent particle sizes.
- Massive Output Requirement: Maintaining a precise micrometer-level fineness at a continuous, heavy-duty capacity of 1 t/h is a massive hurdle for standard grinding mills.
3. The Epic Powder Solution

After evaluating multiple international equipment suppliers, the client chose Epic Powder’s industrial Air Classifier Mill (ACM) system for Soy Protein Isolate . Our sales engineers and technical team designed a customized grinding line specifically for high-protein food materials.
Key Features of the Solution:
- Aerodynamic Cooling & Low-Temperature Grinding: The Air Classifier Mill utilizes high-volume airflow to convey and categorize the material. This rapid airflow effectively dissipates the heat generated during the high-speed impact, keeping the material temperature well below the protein denaturation threshold.
- Integrated Precision Classification: The built-in high-speed air classifier wheel operates synchronously with the grinding rotor. It ensures that only particles meeting the exact d99= 92.8μm target can pass through, recycling coarse particles instantly for re-grinding without over-milling the fines.
- Optimized Anti-Sticking Design: The internal chamber and classification wheel were engineered with specific surface finishes and airflow vectors to minimize protein buildup and guarantee smooth, continuous 1 t/h operation.
4. The Results and Performance
Following the seamless installation and commissioning by Epic Powder’s engineering team, the plant achieved full-scale production smoothly. The equipment exceeded the client’s expectations in several key metrics:
- Flawless Particle Size Distribution: The finished soy protein isolate powder strictly maintained a stable d99 = 92.8μm. The powder showcased exceptional dispersibility and a smooth mouthfeel.
- Stable 1 t/h Capacity: The system consistently held a stable output of 1 t/h, significantly boosting the client’s manufacturing efficiency and fulfilling large market orders.
- Retained Protein Quality: Rigorous post-grinding lab tests confirmed that the protein isolate retained its original high nutritional value, excellent emulsification, and water-binding capacities.
